MAV National Environment Conference 2010

 

 

 

 

 

 

Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) hosted its inaugural National Environment Conference on Transitioning to a climate resilient future in Melbourne on the 15 – 16 April 2010 at the hotel Sofitel.

WPC Group was in attendance sharing and promoting our GreenSkill initiative by handing out our GreenSkills program brochure, business cards and tree saplings. Our passionate and enthusiastic representatives in attendance, Mr Paul Elliott (Industry consultant), Ms Kristie Cooper and Ms Leah Hawkins (Administration) were kept busy throughout the conference duration answering questions from in excess of 250 guests from both the public and private sector that attended.

MAV was developed and hosted by local government for local government and business’s, at this particular conference attendees considered and discussed climate challenges and opportunities in the areas of mitigation, adaptation and adjustment.

The conference explored a range of current and practical local government climate change responses from across Australia and internationally, as well as advice from leading experts.

Local government transitioning to a climate resilient future will require multidisciplinary action and conference attendees had the opportunity to learn more about innovative and leading climate change examples in the areas of the built environment; distributed water and energy systems; natural resource management; community health and wellbeing; agriculture and farming communities; legislation and insurance; coastal planning and green collar industries.

Some other key note speakers that really proved amazing to watch at the event included, Ms Larrisa Brown (Executive Director, Centre of Sustainability Leadership) spoke about and existing of 10 different types of Leaders in Sustainability. Ms Nina Rogers (Manager Climate Change and Environment Policy, MAV) Spoke on her experience from a UK, EU and USA perspective in relation to climate change and Dr Kate Auty (Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability) Spoke about what it takes to become a climate resilient council on a state-wide basis.

WPC Group would like to thank and congratulate MAV for facilitating and letting WPC Group support and participate in such a successful conference and we look forward to part taking in 2011.

Oxfam Trailwalker, Melbourne 2010

On Friday, 16th April, more than 700 teams of four took part in Oxfam TRAILWALKER Melbourne and WPC Group were proud to support Charlie Evans and team again in 2010. Their challenge? To walk (or run) thorough 100km of bushland within 48 hours!

Kicking off at Jells Park in Wheelers Hill, the team were in high spirits, focused and determined to beat their 2009 time and finish at Wesburn Park in the Yarra Valley in less than 22 hours.

Oxfam TRAILWALKER is an annual event and is all about teamwork – it is a great way for friends to bond or for work colleagues to develop team spirit and the money raised supports Oxfam’s work in 27 countries including Indigenous Australia. Each team must commit to raising at least $1,000 as part of the entry conditions and WPC Group were on hand again in 2010, contributing $1,000 to the teams tally of $2,719.

Indigenous Awareness Trip to Darwin and Tiwi Islands

On Thursday March the 11th to Monday March 15th I travelled with Dean Rioli and 14 other people representing their companies on an indigenous awareness trip to the Northern Territory. This trip has been running for 2 years now to make people aware of the boundaries that Aboriginals face in relation to Health, Social, Education and Employment.

On Friday we attended a conference with 2 guest speakers. Professor Jonathan Carapetis is Director of the Menzies School of Health Research. Professor Carapetis is a medical practitioner, paediatrician and specialist in infectious diseases and public health. His research in streptococcal diseases in the Aboriginal population led to the establishment of Australia’s first rheumatic heart disease control program in the Top End. He co-founded the Centre for International Child Health at the Department of Paediatrics, The University of Melbourne. Professor Carapetis’s research is entirely focused on the health of Indigenous people and those in developing countries.

We learnt that the majority of causes of premature death in Aboriginal adults are rooted in early life and in early childhood. That is why it is so important to get it right from the start. It’s a sad fact that young Indigenous people are more likely to suffer from diseases such as pneumonia and that four in five children in remote Indigenous communities experience hearing loss because of severe ear infections. Young Indigenous children are more likely to be hospitalized than non-Indigenous kids, and seven out of every ten Indigenous children can expect to have scabies and skin sores in the first year of their life. Poor health and poor education are strongly linked. A child suffering from poor nutrition or multiple ear infections will have poor concentration and learning ability which can seriously affect the way they live their lives into the future.

The second speaker of the day was Vince Kelly – a former Senior Sergeant of the NT Police and now seconded as the President of the Police Federation of Australia  which is the peak union body representing the interest of approx 50,000 Australian Police Officers. Based in Darwin Vince has seen first hand the struggle of Aboriginal people in the NT with alcohol and drug use. Vince spoke to us about the intervention into Indigenous Communities in the Northern Territory.

Over the next couple of days we looked around Darwin and attended the local NTFL (Northern Territory Football League) – the AFL of Darwin, this is where the likes of Michael Long, Dean Rioli, Kevin Sheedy, Ted Whitten Jnr and Robert ‘Dippa’ Dipierdomenico scout current players and bring them to Melbourne to hopefully achieve their dream of playing AFL. It’s at this time in their career that I work with Dean Rioli and place the players into traineeships or apprenticeships.

On Sunday we travelled 2 hours by boat to the Tiwi Islands (Bathurst) which are located 80kms north of Darwin. The Tiwi Islands lie to the north of Australia’s Northern Territory, and are part of that jurisdiction. Bathurst Island is the fifth-largest island of Australia, and Melville Island is Australia’s largest island apart from the State of Tasmania. It was here we visited an Aboriginal Community and watched the local AFL Grand Final. Tiwi Island is a dry island and no alcohol is to be brought to the island. This is a part of the intervention into Aboriginal communities aimed at reducing crime amongst the locals. Attached are some photos of the Tiwi Islands.

Overall this was a great experience for me to travel with Dean Rioli and to learn more about the challenges that Aboriginals face in the Northern Territory. This visit to the NT further strengthened the relationship between WPC Group and Dean Rioli Aboriginal Employment Services, expanding the training and employment opportunities for our indigenous community.

Creating and Sustaining Skilled Careers – Parliament House Sydney March 2010

“Maintaining a commitment to skills formation in hospitality and tourism is vital if the industry is to prosper”,  said Nicholas Wyman, CEO of one of Australia’s largest employers of apprentices and trainees. Mr Wyman was keynote speaker at a Student Pathways industry leaders function at Parliament House, Sydney on 16 March 2009. In attendance was a large cross section of the industry including employers, government as well as students interested in pursuing  careers in Tourism and Hospitality.

Last  week’s news reported employment growth booming on the back of a record leap in job advertisements. Unemployment overall of Australians looking for work dropped to under 6%, with men doing better than women. The same Australian Bureau of Statistics show, however, what has received little publicity that 15-24 year olds are having a tough time getting a start in hands on training.

The industry is seeing signs of a lag effect as employers with renewed confidence look to re-employ apprentices and trainees with some experience. They are finding this difficult as the number of commencements for trades apprentices in the 12 months ending 30 June 2009 dropped by one fifth. Combined with continuing high unemployment (one in four of 15-19 year olds and double the overall unemployment of 20-24 year olds)  the lag effect will last for the next 3-5 years.

There is currently good availability of talented young people to commence. “Now is the best window of opportunity to decide to bring in apprentices and trainees to ensure your business is skilled up” Mr Wyman said.

Mr Wyman told the group that Tourism is one of the greatest employment generators in our economy. It is one of our strongest export earners while, at the same time, our industry can push spending directly into local communities. If you are looking for a sector that can lead Australia away from difficult times, Hospitality and Tourism should be at or near the top of your list. Now is the time for the industry to start planning for the next boom. Let’s not start thinking about it when the economy has fully recovered and we are back in the same situation of skills shortage.

Developing skills will always be at the heart of strengthening this industry. We need an industry of managers as well as entrepreneurs; we need an industry that understands staff development as much as it understands creativity. Hospitality is where many people get their start in the workforce. We can do better at making sure that a larger proportion stay on because this is a great place to work with great people.  Mr Wyman gave the prospective employees three tips for a successful career in the industry: communicate clearly, cooperate with co workers and have passion for what you do.

WPC Group visits Indigenous communities with DRAES

In conjunction with DRAES (Dean Rioli Aboriginal Employment Services) Paul Elliott will be heading for the Northern Territory next weekend to participate in a cultural awareness trip to the Tiwi Islands.
This trip has been organised  by Dean Rioli and Paul received an invitation to attend. The purpose of this trip is for the participants to interact, experience and gain further education in the following areas:

  • Indigenous employment
  • Cultural issues and awareness
  • Health
  • Cultural boundaries
  • Employment boundaries; specifically related to Indigenous employment

During this trip (March 12-15) Paul will be visiting several Indigenous communities and will participate in presentations conducted by the Northern Territory Police Commissioner and Health Department.
Several high profile AFL players and coaches will be attending also.

Overall, this will be a unique opportunity for Paul and WPC Group. Paul’s involvement in this trip will contribute to ongoing Indigenous employment / recruitment opportunities for apprentices and trainees. Stay tuned for Paul’s full report when he returns!
